An Emergent Suite for Chamber Ensemble
Trigger’s Broom is a composition that plumbs the paradoxes of identity, change, decay, and growth. Soundpainting, graphic scores, structured improvisation, and traditional notation will be re-combined and re-arranged in an open-form, multi-movement suite that will gradually evolve over the course of several performances. Site-specific field recordings from each residency or performance will be recorded and sections of the work will be transcribed and edited. The resulting new material will be integrated into the piece for the next show in a perpetual cycle of composition and improvisation.
This work is made possible with the support of the Con Edison Musicians’ Residency: Composition Program, administered by NYC Performing Arts Spaces, a Program of Fractured Atlas.

[...] Just before the start of May, I met up at Florence E. Smith Community Center in Corona, Queens with representatives from both NYC Performing Arts Spaces and the community center, as well as fellow residency winner Joseph Di Ponio. We toured the community center and discussed details about the residency. (I’m thinking of trying out one of the tai chi classes on my off days…) Overall, I’m excited to use this space over the next three months to work on my newest project: Trigger’s Broom. [...]

[...] In a series I’ve dubbed “Corona Songlines” (see the previous post for the inaugural installment), I’m documenting sounds as I hear them in the walk to and from the train and the community center. I imagine myself an urban soundcatcher, and each trek a chance to hear something fresh as I jot down field notes in a stream-of-consciousness transcription of the environmental sounds around me. Below is the second part of this series. You’ll notice that I’ll occasionally highlight (in bold typeface) sounds that have served or potentially will serve as some inspiration for moments in Trigger’s Broom. [...]
